In these two delightful history-mysteries, seven boys in Ancient Rome solve strange crimes . . . thanks to some help from their cranky teacher, a little bit of logic, and a lot of amusing misadventure.

Yes, Rufus wrote CAIUS IS A DUMBBELL on his tablet at school, but no, he did not break into the schoolroom, did not tie up his teacher, and certainly did not paint his slur about Caius on the Temple of Minerva (even if it is in Rufus's own handwriting). Rufus is doomed unless his six classmates can find out who is really responsible.

In this humorous mystery, Detectives in Togas; Mucius, Julius, Caius, Rufus, Antonius, Flavius and Publis are all sons of Roman aristocracy, and all go to the highly respected Xanthos school in Rome. They are, for the most part, great friends, but it is not suprising that they should have their spats; usually these die down quickly, but not this time. Caius was known not to be the sharpest tool in the shed, but was being annoying and more distracting then usual. Rufus, who was suitably aggravated, wrote "Caius is a dumbell" on a slate and proudly hung it on the school wall like a painting. Uproars between the boys broke out, but that wasn't the end to it there. One day the boys were passing by the Temple of Minerva and saw the words "Caius is a dumbell" scattered across the piece of art. They had no doubt it was Rufus, but soon to be found, was it really his crime?
