The extraordinary #1 New York Times bestseller that is now a major motion picture, Markus Zusak's unforgettable story is about the ability of books to feed the soul.
It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still.
Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.
In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger, has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.

The worst thing about this book was how terrible I felt after I finished reading it, because I knew I would never be able to read the amazing the story again! The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is one of the most touching and saddest books I've ever read. The Book Thief follows the story of Liesel Meminger, who is nine when the story begins, but it is narrated by Death. Liesel , whose brother has recently died, is sent to foster parents Hans and Rosa. With her new family, she discovers love she never knew before and a hunger for reading she must steal books to feed. Liesel also meets the funny, charismatic, Jesse Owens-obsessed Rudy, who will be her friend for the rest of his life, and Max, a Jewish man whom she and her family smuggle into their basement. My description of this book cannot do this story justice. Death's narration makes the story all the more tragic, wonderful, and absolutely amazing. I am nearly positive that this book would make anybody cry, but I am also sure that you will feel like smarter, wiser, better human being by the time you've finished it. This book has it all: action, romance, tragedy, and a wonderful plot. It explores terrible life in Nazi Germany in a beautiful, moving way. If I could recommend any book anyone, it would most definitely be Markus Zusak's The Book Thief.
I haven't even finished it, and it's not that good. It's one of those books that teachers always make you read. It's really cheesy. I like the layout, though. How Each chapter is told from a different character's perspective, and they each tell it a different way.
I think you might be mistaken about what book this is. If I'm correct, the Book Thief is narrated by Death all the way through, not by different characters for each chapter.
This is such a good book. I liked it so much that I chose it to use in a book review for class. I love the way it is told from Death's point of view and the style of writing that he uses. This is definitely a book I recommend.
