"With a bolt of lightning on my kicks . . .The court is SIZZLING. My sweat is DRIZZLING. Stop all that quivering. Cuz tonight I’m delivering," announces dread-locked, 12-year old Josh Bell. He and his twin brother Jordan are awesome on the court. But Josh has more than basketball in his blood, he's got mad beats, too, that tell his family's story in verse, in this fast and furious middle grade novel of family and brotherhood from Kwame Alexander.

Kwame Alexander, the author of The Crossover, takes his readers on a trip to the life of Josh Bell and his basketball season. The Crossover takes place at the basketball court Josh plays all his games, Josh’s house, school, and for a little, the hospital. The main characters in The crossover are, Josh Bell one of the best players on his team, his brother Jordan Bell or JB, their mom, the principal of their school, and their father, former basketball player Chuck Bell. Readers are introduced to Josh and his family whom are surrounded by basketball. Josh becomes jealous from his brother’s girlfriend and how his brother doesn’t pay attention to him anymore and gets suspended from his team. His suspension ends during the championship and he’s able to play. But his father has something that puts him in a coma that may never end. Kwame Alexander made the book sound like Josh was telling the story or it was like Josh’s journal, and Josh was personally talking to the reader. The book does contain sad parts that may make it more difficult to read but overall it was very enjoyable.”At the top of the key, I’m moving and grooving, popping and rocking-- Why you Bumping? Why you locking? Man, take this thumping. Be careful though ‘cause now I’m Crunking” There are many rhymes throughout the book and it makes the book more interesting. events are described in ways that make you enjoy it even more. The Crossover made me laugh, and made me sad, and overall like I was one of Josh’s good friends. It sounds like the reader is able to hear very personal information from Josh. The Crossover, which won the Newberry Honor Award and the Coretta Scott Key Award. Most events that were in the story were important to him at the time he was
This book is good if you like poems. It is filled with poems but not the cheesy poems you are forced to do in English class. These rhymes are slick and will leave you trippin all over the basketball court
Kwame Alexander, the author of The Crossover - takes his readers on a journey of his life as a basketball player. The main characters in The Crossover are Josh Bell but he is called Filthy McNasty, Jordan ( His Twin Brother)and his dad. The setting of the Crossover is in their house because the story is about their life in poetic form also on the basketball court because their whole family except for their mom plays basketball. Everything is going well into they decide to go into their dads privacy and the story changes into a more intense story.I dislike the style of writing the author uses because they write the whole book in poetic form and it is all rhyming and it gets really annoying. No it isn’t funny it is just about their life.Yes, it does give a sense of the setting because it shows you how they speak where they are.“I am not a mathematician a+b seldom equals c. Pluses and minuses we get along but we are not close. I am no Pythagoras.” “Just play ball, JB shouts. Okay, but WATCH OUT, my BROTHER, TARHEEL LOVER. I’m about to go UNDER COVER. Then bring it, he says. And I do, all the way to the top. So SMOOOOOOOOTH, I make him drop.”.The Crossover made me wonder almost fall of the edge of my seat, and made me learn to love basketball.I felt like i was in the book with them playing basketball. It was a great way to experience how that family lived. The Crossover won the Coretta Scott King Award along with the John Newbery Medal.
This is an amazing book. You should read this book not matter what.
