The Ickabog
By J K Rowling
Once upon a time there was a tiny kingdom called Cornucopia, as rich in happiness as it was in gold, and famous for its food. From the delicate cream cheeses of Kurdsburg to the Hopes-of-Heaven pastries of Chouxville, each was so delicious that people wept with joy as they ate them.
But even in this happy kingdom, a monster lurks. Legend tells of a fearsome creature living far to the north in the Marshlands... the Ickabog. Some say it breathes fire, spits poison, and roars through the mist as it carries off wayward sheep and children alike. Some say it's just a myth...
And when that myth takes on a life of its own, casting a shadow over the kingdom, two children - best friends Bert and Daisy - embark on a great adventure to untangle the truth and find out where the real monster lies, bringing hope and happiness to Cornucopia once more.
Featuring full color illustrations by children from across the United States and Canada, this original fairy tale from one of the world's most celebrated storytellers will captivate readers of all ages.

I am going to read it
Because I’m one of those people who always want something new to read, I was extremely glad to receive The Ickabog from DOGO. As soon as I got the book in the mail, I started reading. I immediately fell in love with the amazing illustrations, intriguing storyline, and just the idea of an original fairy tale. I’m not a big fan of stories that start with “once upon a time”, but this book lured me in. Calling all readers—get ready to dive into an adventure you will never forget. Get ready to read the Ickabog! Summary: Welcome to Cornucopia. This tiny country is home to some of the world’s most delectable delicacies—from pastries that taste so good they make you cry in ecstasy to the best cream cheese you’ll find anywhere. Cornucopia is ruled by King Fred the Fearless, and everything has always been peaceful under his reign—until Mrs. Dovetail, his seamstress, dies after being overworked one day. Mrs. Dovetail’s daughter Daisy accuses Fred of being vain and cruel, but the king’s determined to prove her wrong. He gets the perfect opportunity to do this when a poor shepherd from the Marshlands—the only poverty-stricken part of Cornucopia—comes to see him, begging for his help. The shepherd speaks of a vicious, invisible monster called the Ickabog which stole his dog—but monsters aren’t real....or are they?
Journey into the land of Cornucopia! Where king Fred the fearless reigns, the tastiest cheeses, wines, meats and pastries are made as well as where the Ickabog lives. Well MIGHT live. Everyone thinks the Ickabog is just a tale to frighten children. But what if it were true? So one day after being called vain and selfish by a child, King Fred decides to show how NOT selfish and NOT vain he is by helping a poor Marshlander rescue his dog from the Ickabog. But really this is just a façade to make himself feel better as everyone knows the Ickabog is fake.....well at least everyone thinks so until the king sees the Ickabog and Major Beamish is supposedly killed by it! But really Major Beamish was shot and Lord Spittleworth decides to reap the benefits of the unfortunate accident by proclaiming he was killed by the Ickabog and the country now needs to pay the Ickabog tax (most of which goes straight into his pocket). Things soon spiral out of control, and Cornucopia is in need of serious help! Read this book to find out if Lord Spittleworth gets away with all his lies and treachery or if he is brought to justice! I had different expectations for this book since I know J.K Rowling wrote the Harry Potter series. But, after realizing that this is supposed to be a whole different type of book I enjoyed it! I really loved how there are children's illustrations used throughout this book, I think it adds a really nice touch. I think this book would be a great book to be read-aloud before bed during thanksgiving time!
I absolutely enjoyed this novel! I loved how the illustrations are made from children and their imaginations! I would recommend this novel to any of my friends! Two friends, Bert Beamish and Daisy Dovetail have to go on a dangerous path when their homeland, Cornucopia, is threatened by an evil menace known as the Ickabog. Although they have to face some dangers on their journey, some people thought the monster was just a story and there is no Ickabog at all! But they have to question their judgement when Lord Spittleworth, the king's advisor, takes over the land and threatens to kill anyone who goes against his beliefs of the Ickabog. But there are too many holes that have not been filled when it comes to the monstrosity. Soon, Bert, Daisy, and their fellow citizens must think whether the legend of the Ickabog is true, or just part of one big, twisted plot.
I was lucky enough to get an advanced reader's copy, and I was so glad I did!! J. K. Rowling's new book is amazing! It takes you on an adventure in the kingdom of Cornucopia, where each city makes a different type of food, like wines, cheeses, pastries, and more. It is a happy kingdom, and the Ickabog is just a tale parents tell children to make sure they stay in the garden. When the Ickabog takes two lives, though, the kingdom forms a Ickabog Defense Brigade. With power hungry lords stealing money and imprisoning people left and right, children that are forced to fend for themselves, and many twists and turns, this book is great. 5/5, I would definitely recommend this book!
woah i did not know she wrote another book I have to check this out and read it
I was really pleasantly surprised when reading this book! While I do like the Harry Potter books, it isn't really my favorite books. After reading The Ickabog, I got to see J.K. Rowling in a whole new light! I was surprised she was able to write this book so well, and I honestly liked it better then I did the Harry Potter Books. This book takes place in the land of Cornucopia, where everyone is happy, and live is perfect for everyone. After all, Cornucopia has the finest cheese, the tastiest pastries, and the best parties. After hearing about the legend of the Ickabog and wanting to prove how un-selfish he is, the king decides to go to hunt it down. But will he actually be able to hunt it down? And why is it making such a sudden appearance? Soon everyone is confused... Cornucopia is supposed to be a land where dreams take place; not nightmares! I highly recommend this book to both J.K. Rowling fans and people just looking for an awesome adventure to read! 5/5! This story is probally good for all ages, and would make a very fun book club book too! :)
This is a great review!
Thanks so much :)
J.K Rowling is a well known author for her all of her amazing books, and if you love her other novels, then you will truly love this book, maybe even more then the other ones!! This book is truly amazing and so creative, it was definitely a treat to read this, as J.K Rowling takes the reader into an amazing, happy land named Cornucopia, where the have the finest cheese, and tastiest pastries, nothing could possibly go wrong. Everything seems perfect about this world, and everyones lives are as good as can be. But one day someone raises concerns about the ikabog, now whats that you might ask, the ikabog is a feared “monster” that kills people and animals. But the question is does it really exist or is it a fragment of their imagination. Suddenly chaos arrive throughout this happy land when a certain incident happens, this drives everyone into poverty, and everyone now has hopes that their lives will go back to normal. Cornucopia’s foundation is now based off of lies, which keep piling up till no one can take it anymore. Read this book to find out what happens and if they ever overcome these rough times. Overall I would say this book is suitable for all age levels, and is a really engaging book with tons of hidden messages. I picked the book up and did not want to put it back down till I had read the entire thing. J.K Rowling has done it again with possibly one of her best books yet, and I would highly encourage everyone to read this book!!!
I really enjoyed reading this book! I had some very high expectations because JK Rowling write the book and Harry Potter is one of my favorite book series of all time. This book exceeded the expectations! It is set in a land called Cornucopia and is ruled by King Fred the Fearless. The book traveled down roads that I would not have expected, and there were plot twists the I did expect and ones that I didn't expect. It is a book that does not have a ton of action, like fight scenes in it, but there are plenty examples of trickery and betrayal. Overall, I loved this book and would recommend it to any of my friends.
