This book was a good book, with lots of interesting flashbacks, plot twists, and characters. The only this I didn't like was that sometimes I got lost in the flashbacks, and didn't know what was happening.

"A candid and powerful reckoning of history." -- Kirkus Reviews, starred review
When Candice finds a letter in an old attic in Lambert, South Carolina, she isn't sure she should read it. It's addressed to her grandmother, who left the town in shame. But the letter describes a young woman. An injustice that happened decades ago. A mystery enfolding the letter-writer. And the fortune that awaits the person who solves the puzzle.
So with the help of Brandon Jones, the quiet boy across the street, she begins to decipher the clues. The challenge will lead them deep into Lambert's history, full of ugly deeds, forgotten heroes, and one great love; and deeper into their own families, with their own unspoken secrets. Can they find the fortune and fulfill the letter's promise before the answers slip into the past yet again?

This book was very fun to read. It was almost a race for me, trying to solve the mystery before the characters did(I didn't). It addresses the problems of inequality, and the plotline is a thickly woven mystery with pitfalls and surprises along the way.
I am reading this book because it is a mystery and she is trying to find out a secret letter by finding differnt clues this book is so interesting..
THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ. it tells about racism and also has a great sense of mystery to it and will leave the reader wanting more
This book is awesome!!! My mom bought it for me, I was like bor-ing. But this book is amazing. I am an African American, and this book is all about them. Candie finds a letter that's addressed to her grandmother, and boy is it juicy. I don't want too spoil it, but it's worth the money! : )
