The title of this story is quite simple “Bird”, which is also the main character’s nickname. Bird is a thirteen-year old runaway child. The reason she ran away is because of her step dad, Cecil, who left Bird and her mom without saying good-bye. Bird surely believes if she goes after him, he will certainly return to them. During the runaway days, bird made some friends. Cecil has a nephew named Ethan, who’s always been sick and lonely. He has just received a heart transplant and is healthier than he’s ever been. Bird becomes his first friend. She also met a boy named Jay, who’s getting over the death of his brother. Three of them are surviving something difficult to bear. I think the writing style of this book is really special. Each chapter is from a different character's perspective (Bird, Ethan or Jay), but by the end of the book, each of the characters are tied together. “Bird" is a beautiful written story and was easy to read. Even though I spent a bit time getting into the characters, I still enjoyed reading it.Over 8 years agoshannon20 added a book review.

Heidi’s parents passed away while she was only a one-year-old girl. Heidi is sweet-tempered and enjoyed her life a lot, that makes people like her. She became friends with a boy named Peter who lived in the mountains. One day, Aunt Dete took Heidi away to Frankfurt to live with a rich family and their invalid daughter, Clara, who has to sit in the wheelchair. Heidi makes friends with her and learns to read, and was also happy living there. But she is homesick, she missed her grandfather, Peter, and the views of the mountains. One morning, Clara told Heidi that the maid saw a ghost during night…… This is an interesting book. The main character, Heidi, made her grandfather who has a bad temper cheerful. I think the author wants us to learned from Heidi of her optimism and caring heart.Almost 9 years agoshannon20's book review was featured in The Giver (Cascades).
The giver: “The giver” is a story about a controlled society, where there is no feeling, no pain, no suffering, no music and color,no love and no choices, but only sameness. “The Elders” decide who you marry to, whom you adopt as children, and a job will be assigned to you. Jonas has been selected to become “The Receiver of Memory”, and he is the only one who knows what the real world is like, beside his teacher. But Jonas will feel how the people in the real world feel. The reason Jonas has been picked to be the giver is because he has intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom, and most of all, "The Capacity to See Beyond." During training, Jonas started to know the truth, which they were controlled unfairly, and realized the community has murdered sick infants, old people, and those who broke the rules. Therefore, together with the giver, his teacher, they decided to break the rules and change the future of everyone I think “the giver is a creative and interesting story because it showed that how freedom is important to us. If you can’t make decision for yourself, or love whoever you want, what is the purpose of living? I could hardly forget when Jonas learned about love, he asked his parents “Do you love me?” For me, I rather have to face the pain than lose feelings, because that’s how life is interesting!Almost 9 years agoshannon20 added a book review.
Do you have best friends at school? Do you do anything fun with your friends? This book is about what happens to Nicholas and his friends. Nicholas and his friends started a gang called “The Avengers”, there are 8 of them in the gang. The friends played games together and fought their enemies. Sometimes they play trick on others, sometimes the stories are about arguments of the gang. The stories clearly shows thoughts of schoolchild. The story of Nicholas and his friend made me think of my friends and all the fun we had. There are also different books of Nicholas’s story. I’ll like to read them all.Almost 9 years agoshannon20 added a book review.
Everything changed after Conor's mother had cancer. That frightened Conor so much that he even starts to had nightmares. A monster made of branches and leaves in human shape often came in his dreams at 12:07 am. The monster said that it will help Conor by telling him three short stories, but Conor must tell his own story for exchanged. How are the tales and the monster gonna to help Conor? How will he face the death of his mother? "The Monster Calls" is a really touching story, especially in the end. If this happens to me, I'll try my best to make the person who is sick comfortable and feel my caring. We should try our best to accompany them.Almost 9 years agoshannon20 added a book review.
How can you use three words in one sentence to express your idea? A no talking competition between fifth grade boys and girls in Laketon Elementary School will last two days. The captains of the teams are Lynsey and Dave. Some of the teachers support the competition, but others don't. The principle decided to stop this competition, ....... How will the students stop the grown ups? Which group is gonna to win this competition? The interesting part of the story is how the students try to use less words to communicate with others. They get the inspiration from Gandhi, who used no weapons or violence to push the whole British army out of India. He was the one thought no talk could bring orders to one's mind. Maybe I should try to speak less and listen more.Almost 9 years ago
