A British inventor has made his way into the Guinness Book of Records for the fourth time - this one for converting a toy wind-up car, into a real roadworthy vehicle.
Perry Watkins, who lives in Wingrave, Buckinghamshire and has broken his own record for the world's lowest car three times, got the inspiration for his latest idea, while surfing the Internet. Based on a long-standing television series about a British mailman, The Postman Pat car is a toy made for kids 2-5 years of age.
When Perry purchased the used car, it was not even in working condition, which was fine with him, since he wanted to use just the frame.
He started with re-enforcing the chassis with steel, to make it stronger. After that, he mounted it on a mini quad bike. Then came a 150cc engine, wipers, exhaust, lights and indicators and viola! - The 39-inch high and 26-inch wide car was ready to go on the road.
After receiving the necessary license and permits, Perry somehow squeezed himself into the tiny vehicle and took it for a spin. He says the reaction from everybody who saw him was the same - complete disbelief at first and then, howls of laughter!
It took Perry seven months to fix the car, but all his hard work paid off since earlier this week, the folks from the Guinness Book of Records confirmed that this was indeed the smallest car in the world, taking over from the Peel 50, which, at a height of 52.8-inches and width of 39-inches is almost double the size. Wonder what Perry will think up of next!
